Roundin’ Up The Raves: CVC, Emily King, The Lemon Twigs

Hey, gang! So, I’m fairly certain that wading through hundreds of new releases every month partially led to my crash and burnout three years ago.

I. . . I tried to round them up. I did. And they trampled me.

It’s not good when a music writer starts craving silence, ya know? And that’s why this is the first post of new releases you’re seeing since The Mighty Blog Resurrection of ’23.

Moving forward, we’re simply going to let a whole bunch of them totally slip past us! Run free, new albums! Only the finest of the herd shall be roped in and receive blue ribbons — basically, anything I feel inclined to listen to more than twice. Put another way, blue ribbons will likely appear only slightly more frequently than blue moons.

But enough jawin’. Let’s round ’em up:

CVC – Get Real

The Church Village Collective, or CVC, recorded their album in a living room and features the nephew of Welsh songstress Shirley Bassey on guitar. They play the kind of throwback, laid back rock ‘n’ roll (which somehow echoes both the late 1970’s and early 2000’s — like The Beta Band if they played yacht rock) that hopefully Generation Z will discover and fall in love with and send to the top of the charts.

Emily King – Special Occasion

A mellow R&B album comprised mostly of ballads and mid-tempo reflections that’s perfect for pensively looking out the window on a rainy day. Of course, I’m going to play the two poppiest songs for you because that’s what I do.

The Lemon Twigs – Everything Harmony

The melodic pop smarts of early 70’s Emmitt Rhodes and Todd Rundgren meets the melancholic side of Big Star on the latest from brothers Brian and Michael.

  1. CVC gets my attention. I like those two songs a lot. Emily won’t play for some reason, not even when I search for her on YouTube. It might be a copyright issue.

    • I’m glad you like the CVC! They were a nice find early this year.
I replaced the Emily King videos and checked to make sure they’d play in the UK. I used to always check but this will remind me to keep an eye on it!
