Roundin’ Up The Raves: The Cat Empire, Kendra Morris, The Winery Dogs

If only I could have found another animal-based artist to go along with the cats and dogs. Even better, one with “Rain” in their name. But no matter, I natter quite enough. On with the dog and pony show. Ponies! That would have been a good one, too.

Let’s round ’em up.

The Cat Empire — Where The Angels Fall

The opening track mentions gumbo and that’s an apt description since the band, while pulling primarily from funky, jazz-tinged sources, mix in a lot of whatnot, as well. Apparently they’re Australian and have been building their Meowmpire for the last 20 years. They’re the pajamas.

Kendra Morris — I Am What I’m Waiting For

Off-kilter, atmospheric throwback R&B with all kinds of fun swoops and swirls. What are you waiting for?

The Winery Dogs — III

This trio of musical veterans cut their teeth in the hard rock trenches of the 80’s and 90’s. Between them, they’ve played with Poison, Mr. Big, Dream Theater, Steve Vai, and David Lee Roth (just to name a few). The music they make now is very catchy, surprisingly soulful hard rock that takes its influences from Bad Company to Pearl Jam. Stomp them grapes, boys!

  1. All new to me! Love love love the Kendra Morris tracks – and your description of them! They surprise me in the way of Beck, what with the fun “swirls and swoops,” as you’ve aptly titled them. I got that, “What did I just hear?” feeling of wanting to go back and listen to them again. The Winery Dogs are fun too. Love me a rock guitar riff! And is it just me or does the singer sounds a bit like Chris Cornell?!
