Halloween’s over and there’s naught to do but to comb through our spoils. Let’s see what’s in our goodie bag, shall we? Mmmm, a little harmony, a little country, a little indie rock, and…..raisins?! Okay, who put raisins in here?
Anyway, let’s round ’em up:
The Heavy Heavy — One Of A Kind
A modern take on the vintage atmosphere of the late 60’s and early 70’s, The Heavy Heavy don’t actually sound like their name would suggest. It’s not acid rock and Led Zeppelin with this pair, but rather the harmonious rock of mid-period Fleetwood Mac.
Five of my favorite contemporary country artists have released albums this year. Like the other four artists, Cauthen doesn’t like to play by the rules. I suspect his first couple of albums might have received criticism in certain corners for not being “country” enough, which would explain why his last album contained a retort titled “Country As F***.” He’s the new face of outlaw country and his latest doesn’t disappoint with its eclectic mix of alt country, pure country, hip hop country, and synth country.
The Belair Lip Bombs — Lush Life
Okay, this Australian group’s debut came out last year, but since it’s being reissued here in the US I’m counting it as a new release. Classic setup of two guitars, bass, and drums with nothing else but a touch of horn on the last track. Otherwise, it’s pure band. With echoes of 80’s/90’s UK alternative and indie rock, they sound comfortingly familiar.
