Hey, What’s That Song? “Colour Me” by Dot Allison

Some singers are so good they keep getting hired for other projects and barely have time to focus on their own. Always nice to be wanted, though.

Dot Allison first came to the attention of the music world (at least a small corner of it) in the early 1990s as part of Scottish electronic music group One Dove. They released their lone album and a few moderately successful singles in 1993 before breaking up due to frustration with their record label and the music business (hey, have a talk with Graham Parker).

Over the next 30 odd years or so, Allison has featured as a vocalist and collaborator with a wide array of artists, including Scott Walker, Death In Vegas, Massive Attack, Paul Weller, Pete Doherty (of The Libertines), Kevin Shields (of My Bloody Valentine), Hal David (of Burt Bacharach), and many, many more. She has also performed on a number of TV and movie soundtracks.

In 1999, Allison released her first solo album, Afterglow. Filled with a mix of electronica, trip hop, and pop — all with stellar vocals — the album garnered attention from the music press, but also drew the eyes and ears of fellow musicians. Since then she has kept busy, but her own solo albums have been quite spread out, averaging about one every five years.

“Colour Me” serves as the opening track for Afterglow and was the third single released from the album. It wasn’t a hit, but the bass hook is undeniable and chef’s kiss to the processed vocals on the chorus.

NB: that killer bassline is played by Mani (RIP) who came to fame with The Stone Roses and later Primal Scream.
