Roundin’ Up The Raves: The Queen Of Spades, Steve Lacy, Luther Russell, JR JR

Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.

                                                                  — Martin Mull

And yet, every week I continue to make the attempt. Excuse me while I foxtrot a rococo cathedral.

Let’s round ’em up.

The Queen Of Spades – The Recent Past

A modern take on 70’s hard rock and classic rock. Not enough bands are doing this. More please.

Steve Lacy – Apollo XXI

The musical style-jumping audacity of Prince with some smooth D’Angelo-inflected slow jams. Dude’s only 21. Future = bright.

Luther Russell – Medium Cool

If you’re going to sound like someone, sounding like Alex Chilton on Big Star’s second record is a pretty good choice.

JR JR – Invocations/Conversations

JR JR release a double album of gorgeous indie-pop.
