It’s getting harder every year to find an abundance of good, new music. I don’t know if that’s a “me” problem or if it’s simply the state of the music scene right now. Probably a bit of both. But there’s gold to be found if you’re willing to pan enough streams.

Joyce Manor — I Used To Go To This Bar

Joyce Manor have been plying their trade for over a decade now, alternating between snotty pop-punk and Weezer-style rock. They’ve always had a little more range and depth than your average band making this kind of music but if you’re familiar with their discography you still might not be prepared for the new album, which sounds like Joyce Manor may have recently listened to The Smiths, The Replacements, and Duran Duran.

hemlocke springs — The Apple Tree Under The Sea

I’m a sucker for ambition. hemlocke springs is the nom de pop of Naomi Udu, and she is nothing if not ambitious on her full-length debut. Imagine Kate Bush, Prince, Marina and The Diamonds, and Sparks wending their way through Wonderland in a hyper-pop dream.

The apple is shiny and you should absolutely take a bite.

Norma — Country Catering

Did you know country and Americana music is big in Norway? Me neither. Norma add some modern elements, but mostly make laidback music that wouldn’t be out of place on a country-rock record in the early 70s. Some very nice guitar tones and solos, too.
