Just what the internet needed . . . another music blog. So why should you trust me? Actually, you shouldn’t. Not until I’ve proven to you that I know what I’m talking about and my opinions aren’t totally insane (the internet loves insane, but I’m mostly reasonable).
So who am I to tell you about anything? Well, I’m just some guy, ya know . . . but I’ve been seriously collecting and listening and studying music history since my early teen years back in the late ’80s.
My name is Houston Roby: Gen X, married, one daughter, lived all over the US as well as Asia and Europe. The Beatles are my favorite band, so I tend to favor short, super-catchy songs with clever arrangements and unpredictable twists. Hey, I like the pop music. But my tastes range widely, from Hank Williams to Uriah Heep to Modest Mouse. So I’m prepared to tell you why The Rolling Stones’ Let It Bleed is a masterpiece, but so is Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, albeit for different reasons.
I’m not sure what direction this blog will take, but it will likely comprise contemporary album reviews, a lot of history, and occasional observations on general musical phenomena. Hopefully, a little something for everyone, but probably focusing a little more heavily on aspiring music geeks. It will be more on the general side, so if you want an in-depth analysis of King Crimson’s Lark’s Tongue In Aspic and why it’s better or worse than ELP’s Brain Salad Surgery, then you’re probably in the wrong place. If you don’t know what ELP stands for, I will eventually tell you. And you’re in the right place.
Reading your ‘about’ page, a couple of things struck me as “well, how about that!”
My favorite band is also the Beatles and I feature them often, both musically and in my stories. I saw them at Shea in ’65. “Let It Bleed” is indeed a masterpiece (recently featured it as a video accompaniment to a story). I’m a fan of both King Crimson and Uriah Heep (who I saw in concert in Allentown, PA in August, early 70s, at an outdoor venue in unbearable scorching heat); the warm-up acts were Earth, Wind & Fire and ZZ Top! Oh, BTW …. I do know what ELP stands for; just saying.
I think I’m going to enjoy this site! – Nancy
You’ve led the musical life of my dreams, Nancy! The Beatles at Shea…have you ever spotted yourself in a documentary? I discovered them through my Mom’s Red and Blue compilations and reruns of the 60s Beatles cartoons. A few years later I bought every record, book, and bootleg I could find.
It sounds like we have similar wide-ranging tastes. I love Top40 AM pop but also the progressive and harder-edged FM rock. I would have loved that Uriah Heep show with those opening acts, even with the scorching heat!
I very much do hope you enjoy the site! – Houston
Nope, I’ve never spotted myself in the crowd and believe me, I’ve looked!
