Happy New Year, you seekers of musical knowledge!
2017 provided a wealth of strong albums, along with a few surprises, and I’m already psyched out of my mind (lots of Elf last month) to see what’s next.
As usual, today begins the blank slate. It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new year. I’m going to kick things off with a little tune I recently discovered, a cover of a big 80’s dance hit in the UK (but little known in the US). Stornoway strip it down and put their own spin on it.
For those who were up late partying, this is a gentle good morning.
Happy New Year! Wasn’t familiar with this song and looked up the original (wasn’t familiar with Yazz either). The band name made me think of my late grandma. In her final years she lived in a nursing home that had a resident cat, who she called “Yazz”. Its name was Jazz. Still makes me chuckle thinking about it now.
That made me smile. I heard the song in a TV show a few weeks ago and couldn’t get it out of my head. Had never heard of it, or the original. Always nice to discover something new!
It is! Speaking of songs in TV shows, heard one from the new Vulfpeck album in an episode of Easy. Strange and wonderful, after following them for so long, to hear them in the Netflix realm.
Oh, that’s awesome! I’d love to randomly hear Vulfpeck in a TV show!
I believe it was Running Away.
Have you seen this fun video of Dean Town? I love how the band always looks like they’re having the time of their lives, not to mention the audience singing along to Joe Dart’s riff. (And the guy in the front row wearing the classic Jack Stratton red t-shirt, lol.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ruXOh74xRE
