It’s What’s Happening: The Sing Off

I hate TV executives. Specifically, I hate NBC TV executives for canceling one of my favorite shows—the acapella singing competition, The Sing Off—after only three seasons. I’ll grant that their ratings didn’t even come close to those of The Voice (NBC’s #1 rated show), but the debut album by the winners of last season’s The Sing Off sold twice as many copies as the winner of last season’s The Voice. So they had to be doing something right. Plus, it’s a reality show—c’mon, those cost about 20 dollars to produce.

Now, if you’re saying to yourself, “Acapella? Does it get any geekier?” then perhaps you’re thinking of your granddaddy’s acapella. We’re not talking straw boaters and “Goodnight, Ladies” here. Check out last year’s winners, Pentatonix, covering Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” (as usual, I highly recommend listening through speakers or headphones for best quality):

Who needs instruments? And below we have second-place finishers, The Dartmouth Aires, killing it with a Queen medley they performed on the show:

Finally, here’s a gorgeous version of Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal” by Sonos (who didn’t even finish in the Top 10 last season):

So thanks a lot, NBC. Good luck with Animal Practice. [Edit: Animal Practice, which replaced The Sing Off, was cancelled in October after maybe three episodes.]
