What’s with all these teens in the UK wanting to play the music of their grandparents? Back in high school, my friends and I never had the urge to form a swinging big band hybrid of Glenn Miller and Count Basie. But across the pond, some youngsters are ignoring modern trends in favor of dusting off Nana and Grandad’s old 45s.

Last year, Jake Bugg and his Dylan-meets-Oasis vibe propelled him to the top of the UK charts (here in the US, Gatorade recently placed his song “Lightning Bolt” in a commercial). And now we have The Strypes, an Irish foursome who look like a mod One Direction (sorry lads, you’ll probably hear that a lot) but sound like early Rolling Stones crossed with the manic energy of early Who and Yardbirds. They’ve recently garnered plaudits from Jeff Beck, Dave Grohl, Sir Elton John and Noel Gallagher, all of whom have been spotted at live gigs.

The Strypes formed two years ago and set about sharpening their chops and finding their sound. (I can’t say for certain, but I’m almost positive their name is not a nod to Christian glam-metal band, Stryper.) They self-released an EP of exuberant R&B chestnuts in April of last year, doing all the promotion themselves. This led to a bidding war among record labels and serious attention from the media. “Blue Collar Jane” is their first self-penned single.
